Sukkafish

The Grates played the Limerick Junction last night. The venue used to be known as The Brickyard. It's now under new management, though the interior looks pretty similar and it's still located in a sketchy area of town.

The opening band was Hot Loins.....who were horrible. The singer/guitarist didn't seem comfortable onstage and had some really weird outbursts through his movements. He also started insulting the crowd somewhat. They could definitely use some more practice time before playing to an audience.

The Grates were awesome as expected. Singer Patience Hodgson has so much energy and makes the stage look like a trampoline, bouncing all over the place. We saw them open for We Are Scientists back in March and were quite impressed with their performance.

Before Patience got onstage, she mentioned to us that she had eaten a burrito bought from a store nearby and wasn't feeling the greatest now. I told her that I wouldn't even drink the water being offered around the downtown eastside. Nonetheless, the burrito didn't get to her while onstage. She also mentioned that people from Universal Music were in attendance at the show. The reps were here to check out the band before signing them to a record deal to distribute their album in Canada.

Near the end of their set, Patience got off the stage and sang Rock Boys while waving around one of those ribbons used in gymnastic performances. It was pretty neat and something I've never seen before at a show. She then hopped back on the stage and the band finished off their 40min set with an upbeat performance of 19 20 20.
