Sasquatch! Day 2

Day 2: Saturday May 27

We arrived at the Gorge Amphitheatre just in time to catch the last two songs of Rogue Wave.

Caught Architecture In Helsinki next at the Wookie side stage. Coming into the festival, Architecture, Sufjan, and The Decemberists were the ones I was most excited about seeing. There was a big turnout to see the Australian band. They played with a lot of instruments and their set lasted 1hr. I thought they did a pretty good job considering they played a show in Vancouver the night before, then had to make the 5hr trek down to the Gorge to perform shortly after.

They played a new song for us, plus had solid performances of Neverevereverdid, It'5!, and In Case We Die.

Sufjan Stevens was scheduled to play the main stage the second that Architecture ended their set. Thankfully, the set times at the main stage were already delayed so we were able to catch a few songs from Gomez when we got back.

Sufjan took the stage with his entourage that he referred to as "the amazing patriotic american national 50 states band". Being Memorial Day Weekend, Mr. Stevens had a patriotic American theme going for his set. During his brief 40min performance, he threw air-filled Santa Claus and Superman Dolls into the crowd.

Some songs in his set included Jacksonville, Decatur, and Chicago. He also played an interesting version of the star spangled banner. One of his guitars had the body in the shape of the American map.

Scored some BBQ chicken skewers after his set. They were quite tasty, unlike the burnt chicken sandwich that I bought the day before. That was the worst sandwich ever. Caught a bit of Iron and Wine's performance.

Went back to the side stage to catch some songs from Band Of Horses. It takes about 5 minutes to walk the uphill climb from the Sasquatch main stage to the Wookie side stage. It was actually pretty good exercise the entire weekend to walk the 15 minutes from our campsite to the venue, then constantly bounce between stages throughout the day.

Neko Case was at the third song into her set when the craziest hailstorm I've ever experienced hit. The hail came down strong for over 10 minutes straight and everyone was getting soaked. The balls of hail were quite big and it was hitting pretty hard too. Despite trying to cover up, I took some good shots to the neck, ears, and lower back. I pretty much got rocked.

In the end, it was Hailstorm: 1 Me: 0

Neko being the trooper tried to play through it but she was getting pelted and eventually had to stop her set as the equipment was getting soaked. The whole festival ended up getting delayed for awhile as the crew tried to clean up the mess and make sure it was still safe to continue. On the side stages, the Constantines were at their first song in when the hail hit. They also had to cancel their set along with both Sam Roberts and Matt Costa, who were scheduled to play after the Cons. Tim Seely on the Yeti stage had his performance cancelled as well.

The hail was a good bonding experience as everyone worked together and huddled in circles trying to stay warm. People were also allowed to go back to their camps to change and be re-admitted into the venue.

We headed back to our campsite to change and arrived back at the Gorge Amphitheatre to find The Tragically Hip on stage continuing the show. There were a lot of Canadians that came down to the Gorge to catch The Hip play. Unfortunately, both The Hip and The Shins had their sets shortened after the weather delay. Gord Downie did a good job entertaining the crowd with his antics, as did the quartet from Portland that followed.

The Flaming Lips were scheduled to play next but due to the delays and Ben Harper having a show the next day in Vancouver, Mr. Harper stepped onto the stage instead. Ben played an awesome 1hr 50min set filled with energy and emotion. There were many times when it looked like he was finished but he just kept going. I really enjoyed the acoustic portion of his set that included Another Lonely Day and Walk Away.

It took an hour for The Flaming Lips to set up before they hit the stage. The Saturday show was scheduled to end at midnight, but The Lips didn't even get on stage until 12:20am that night. Having to deal with the wind and coldness, in addition to being soaked, many people left the venue before The Lips even took the stage. I'm pretty glad I stayed though since their performance was quite enertaining.

Wayne Coyne came on stage inside a giant bubble and rolled into the crowd. The Kloppster filmed a short video on it along with a few more from the weekend. On the stage during their entire set were these awesome dancing santas on one side and dancing aliens on the other side. Wayne also had a video camera on top of his microphone so that he could talk and have his face projected on the giant screen behind him.

A definite highlight of their 1hr 20min set was the sweet cover of Bohemian Rhapsody they did with everyone singing along. Yoshimi Part 1 was sounded good. They ended their encore with a cover of Black Sabbath's War Pigs.

After the show, we had some burgers back at camp. Like the first night, there was some kind of rave going on at a tent not too far from ours. That along with the constant "Let's Go Oilers!" chants and other obscene things happening throughout the night kept things entertaining.
